Once pruning is done, new plants are planted and the garden is basically on its way, I'm ready for the next color in the garden -- brown.
That's right. Not dead brown, but bright, organic great-smelling mulch brown. Native Texas hardwood much is my favorite. It helps protect the plants from the heat and the cold, and it helps keep precious moisture in during the drought.
And it is another color in the garden -- it provides a great deal of the contrast we want in our landscapes.
And there's nothing like walking through the garden and reaching down to brush some of that fluffy, fresh mulch off a few leaves.
I think we're over 9 yards now. They had to go get another truck load of it, so I'm not sure what the final total was.
All the plants are happy, as is this gardener!
...And you waited until all the leaves were down. New mulch shows off that new growth too. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteThe mulch is very nice, but what caught my eye was your prostrate yew. You got one! How do you like it? Also, what is the burgundy, grassy plant in the 3rd photo?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Love the yew:) I have it on my plant wish list. The Native TX mulch is my fav as well. Thank you once again for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. I'm hoping to get my mulch order delivered this week too now that our weather's cooled and I'm less likely to pass out while getting it spread.
ReplyDeleteWe are moving to a new house with a blank slate of a yard. I am ordering a load of compost, but also a load of what the farm calls 'compo-mulch'. There will be a lot of extra mulching at least this first year. Soil improvement is always on the schedule.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great and I bet it smells wonderful, too. I have sometimes left a few bags of Texas Native mulch in my car for a few weeks (pure laziness) and the smell makes me happy- like I'm bringing the garden with me around town!
ReplyDeleteShirley - I DID wait. And, let me tell you, it was hard to do cuz it really needed new mulch!
ReplyDeletePam - I've had the yew for almost 2 years, now and love it. I added several more along the front of the path last year. They're doing great. The burgundy plant is cordyline, one of my faves - I have several different kinds.
Steph - I know we can't grow many plants like the plum yew, so I'm glad it does well here.
Kris - I'm just thankful our storms last night were too windy and my beds didn't end up full of leaves and sticks!
CommonWeeder - Yes, soil improvement is so important and that's why I love this mulch - it does break down.
Travis Heights Garden Mama - I do love the smell of mulch. That's hilarious about you driving around with it in the car. I'm always posting pics of the plants I buy when I'm driving around town with them, too!
