Zilker Garden Fest

I had a delightful day yesterday with my parents at the Zilker Garden Festival. It's the plant event of the year in Austin, and my favorite thing to do. We've been going for at least 20 years and I never tire of it.

Vendors come from all around to sell plants and pottery and garden art and other crafts. There is a kid's corner and music and food and it's just the most wonderful time.

I filled my wagon this time (I usually do) and am so pleased with the interesting things I found:

Ming Fern
3 Homestead Verbena
2 sedums - 1 variegated no-name and 1 pulchellum Sea Star
1 Mock Orange Philadelphus coronarius
1 spotted Bromeliad
1 Dragon Tongue Bean
2 bags of Tulipa Clusiana bulbs (gave one to my Mom and Dad)
1 Aloifolia Yucca (pink and lime green variegated)

I like to buy unusual things at ZilkerFest, because the nursery vendors tend to bring their best or most interesting specimens to show.

Today I planted bluebonnets, 3 tomatoes, 1 pimiento pepper, horseradish, chamomile, and my Space saver cucumber seedlings. I also planted two passalong Baby Blue Eyes that Bob at Draco Gardens brought to the Design A Go Go.

I still have some Society Garlics from my friend to passalong for any Austin area gardeners who need some. Let me know if you want some!

Another beautiful day is on tap for tomorrow ... wonder what trouble I can get into the garden tomorrow? Do you have garden plans for Tuesday? Or the rest of the week?

I am new to gardening, really my first full season. I would like to try some of the soceity garlic if you still have some. I can either come during my lunch hour or after work or even on Satruday. Just let me know. Thanks.

Caroline - I don't know - I've got to check into it. Seems like they'd be better in the ground, don't you think?

Cynthia - I'm happy to share. I am in Oak Hill off FM 1826 - maybe we could meet somewhere on yr lunch hr - Target at S. MoPac & 290? What's a good day? You can email me @ dianackirby@gmail.com

That yucca looks really neat. I was tempted to go to the Fest while I was in town but decided I didn't want to deal with the traffic and parking (I've become a wimp now that I live in a small town!).

Jean - Wish you could have come by, but I know it's always hard to squeeze everything in when you visit somewhere. Zilker was pretty crowded, but worth it!

What a nice event and sounds like you had a good haul. What fun.

I knew you would come away from Zilkers with some really neat stuff. I am green with envy. Nothing much for sale here yet except at the big box stores and they have the regulars. Yep, I will be out in the garden again today. Pulling away at the weeds and spreading mulch. Will it ever end??? No... that is ok.

Janet - It was so nice, and so great that we had such nice weather to wander and look at plants. Now comes the work part!

Lisa - It's so hard when you're ready to have fun in the garden and there are only chores to be done. I hate that! I'll do so much to avoid weeding, but it sure feels good when it's done, though.

Sounds like a great haul which will give you plenty to do this week. I resisted getting more plants telling myself I need to plant what I have before I get more.

It was a beautiful day at the fest. My daughter-in-law, Alice, and I had a good time and bought lots of plants. Then, we went to Barton Springs Nursery.

Needless to say, I've been digging and planting. But, it's worth it.

I'm sorry I missed the clusianas. Oh well..maybe next time.

Looks like you got a good haul.

I'd thought about trying to run over to Austin for the fest. I decided I'd wait and attempt a trip in 2 weeks when the LBJWC has its spring sale ... if I can tear myself away from my garden.

Lancashire Rose - That's my constant push-me/pull-you. How many plants waiting to go in is the right #? I can't always go to the nursery when I want to, so it's great to have plants on hand, but then they sit too long some times.

Patchwork - I am happy with what I got, EXCEPT the White Homestead Verbena that they sold me as purple!I'm bummed. But I will find a spot for it eventually!

Cindy - so, are you coming to the sale this weekend? Members preview sale is Friday at 1!
