Frolicking finches...

Our vibrant gold finches love drinking out of the fountain in the back yard. My determined DH stood still long enough to blend into the background and get some great shots of them. With our temperatures over 100 every day for 52 days now thus far this summer -- they are loving the moving water for a drink and an occasional dip!

Gail -- not only that, he did it while he was methodically cooking a giant package of bacon on the grill burner so we could freeze it and eat on it for a few weeks every morning! (He's a good guy!) And the bird is adorable, isn't he?

Way to go DH. Great photos. I don't blame the poor little things getting some water in those kind of temps. whew. I am amazed that anything survives those temps for so long.

Lisa -- I'm amazed at how much the deer are drinking, too. I have a big mosaic bowl -- bigger than a large dog water bowl -- and I have to fill it for them at least twice a day! Now they stand across the woods and watch me put out food and water sometimes, that's how desperate they are.

How smart of him to be able to blend! Great shots and lovely fountain. Our goldfinches are different, no black on the back, only the head. The females are more muted without any black. Interesting! :-)

Frances -- They are very skittish, so he must have been standing there quite a while. We also have tons of house finches -- the red and gray ones. I've never seen Gold finches with only a black head, that is interesting.

Need to look up your blackheaded finch, looks cute. Love the fountain.
I remember the scissor-tail flycatchers in TX.
